  1. The Atlanta Exposition at which Booker T. Washington delivered his influential speech took place in September 1895 (page 30 and index).

  2. The Natives Land Act of South Africa was passed in 1913. (The name of the law is misstated on pages 54, 57, 61, 62 and 234 and in one instance the year given as 1912, page 61).

  3. Protests against the introduction of women’s pass laws began in 1912, but Charlotte Maxeke’s involvement was largely driven by her role in the founding of the Bantu Women’s League in 1918 (page 67).
