Today, journalism continues to change rapidly. Fewer daily newspapers serve their communities—especially in major markets—from a high of 1,878 in 1940 to 1,437 in 2010. Even for those daily newspapers still operating, newsroom jobs have dropped 30 percent in the last decade. Interestingly, the number of weekly newspapers has increased during the past 30 years, now totaling 6,700.


Magazines are enjoying growth and now number 20,600, mostly the result of additional special-interest titles. Likewise, TV and radio stations continue to prosper.


Increasingly, traditional media use online sites to deliver content already published or broadcast, with many posting Web-first and Web-only material. At last count, newspaper-related websites totaled more than 1,500, with online-only news sites numbering about 200.


Social media have become powerful, often supplanting traditional media in their ability to deliver news and information and to interact with audiences in ways that traditional media never could. Think curation, trending topics, crowdsourcing, citizen journalism and hyperlocal media.


Yet, one thing remains constant for all news media: They continue to need well-trained editors who can help to deliver their content effectively—and correctly—regardless of the platform used. Copycrafting was written to answer that demand and covers all aspects of editing.


Importantly, each chapter in Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 offers exercises to give students practice applying specific rule sand to let instructors know how well their students are learning the material. Chapter 28, “The Full Story,” brings everything together with errors across the spectrum and provides ample stories for students to edit, 40 in all. They also will have opportunities to write headlines for each.


An appendix includes a directory for students to consult as they complete the exercises, which are set in Heartland, Mo., a fictional town located in the center of the state and near the center of the nation. The appendix also includes a listing of online resources for most of the chapters as well as additional supporting materials.


Copycrafting is a concise package that meets the needs of college and university editing courses and makes the demanding task of teaching those courses more manageable and learning that content more effective.
