General content questions

1. What are the aims and scope of Oxford Biblical Studies Online?

Oxford Biblical Studies Online brings together a range of authoritative Bible texts, up-to-date scholarly commentary, and reference materials for a wide range of research and study activities. The content is structured with a breadth and depth that will benefit students, specialists, faculty and divines, scholars in a variety of disciplines, and reference librarians. 2. What content is available on the site?

The site contains the full text of six Bibles from a variety of denominations and the apocryphal texts from both the Old and New Testaments. To help guide readers through this wide range of biblical material, the site also includes the Oxford Bible Commentary which provides line-by-line analysis for all the biblical texts, two biblical concordances, and numerous chaptered works that provide historical and cultural context such as How to Read the Bible and The Illustrated History of the Bible. Also included are traditional reference sources such as the Oxford Bible Dictionary, the Oxford Bible Atlas, and two encyclopedias in their entirety—the acclaimed Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the five-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of Archaeology in the Near East. In all, twenty print sources are available on the site. Starting with the first update in October 2009, we began adding articles from the forthcoming Encyclopedia of the Bible, edited by the site's Editor in Chief Michael D. Coogan. Special features and tools of the site include an intuitive side-by-side environment for comparing different bible texts and commentaries, quick links to bible passages cited in commentaries and reference content, timelines, Bible Verse Look-up, and a Tools & Resources section with quick links to reference content that will aid study, teaching and research. 3. Are all images from the print sets included online?

We have made every effort to include all images where copyright allows. The display of images online is subject to a different set of copyright regulations than those that apply to print publication. We have included any illustrations where we own the copyright or which have no copyright restrictions and have also obtained a substantial number of permissions to display images online. We will be increasing the number of images through our ongoing editorial content update program.

4. How often is Oxford Biblical Studies Online updated?

We will be updating the site three to four times a year with new content and revisions to existing articles. Updates will include articles from forthcoming print publications as well as the series of Focus On articles—special features on topics of current or historical interest commissioned for publication on this site. The current Focus On feature is freely available to all visitors to the site.

5. How can I find out when a new Focus On feature appears?

Sign up on the Current Feature page for Focus On email alerts, to learn when a new article with Related Content links has been posted. Oxford provides free public access to the Focus On Alerts service, Current Feature articles and Related Content links. When new Focus On features are added, the earlier articles continue to be accessible to the public, but when a Focus On article becomes a Previous Feature, the Related Content links to further reading within the site return to subscriber-only access control.

6. How do I cite articles from Oxford Biblical Studies Online?

Bibliographic citation is provided in Chicago and MLA formats for all content included in the site. A "Cite" button is provided on the tool bar for every entry of the site. Users can also export citations through EndNote™, ReferenceManager™, and ProCite™.

7. How do I submit a comment or correction?

If you have any general or specific comments on the content of an article or find a cross-reference link that is not working properly, you can send an email to the editorial staff or use the contact us form to submit your comments. When providing a comment about a specific article, please provide as much detail as possible and include the URL of the page being referred to by copying and pasting the URL from your browser's address box into your message. Comments will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in the next available update.

8. Are educators from subscribing institutions allowed to use images from Oxford Biblical Studies Online in presentations for their classes?

All images in Oxford Biblical Studies Online are available for educational use (presentations, research, homework, papers, etc.) within fair use/fair dealing/educational exemptions permitted under the copyright law in the country where the user/institution is based. Images are not to be used for commercial purposes (publications, posters, merchandise, etc.). Please contact commercial image providers directly if you wish to use art images for commercial purposes. 9. How do I subscribe to Oxford Biblical Studies Online?

10. Is it possible to have a free trial?

Free 30-day trials are available to libraries and institutions considering a subscription. If you are an individual and would like to try out the site, find out if your library or organization already subscribes or is interested in a free trial. Librarians and administrators can sign up for a trial on this site.

11. Are discounts available to consortia and consortia members?

Special pricing is available for library consortia. For further details, please get in touch with your consortia manager or contact us.

12. I cannot access Oxford Biblical Studies Online.

Suggestions for Library administrators

a) Please verify that you have submitted your library's signed subscriber agreement to OUP. All new subscriptions require a signed license agreement on file that has been verified prior to activating service.

b) Please check that OUP has your library's most current IP address information on file. Administrators can verify account details from Subscriber Services. You will need an administrative login. If you have lost or forgotten your administrative password, please contact us.

c) If your library's IP information has changed, please contact us to report the new address(es) or to update IP information currently registered.

The site should be accessible to general users using most current and many legacy browsers. Oxford Biblical Studies Online is specifically tested and designed for correct display and function on the following browsers:

Select the button for “Fonts...” You can retain the Latin display, but need to select change the Web page font to a Unicode font such as Ariel Unicode MS or Lucida Unicode.
Click OK, and then select “Accessibility...”
Under Formatting, check the box “Ignore font styles specified on Web pages” and click OK.
You should now be able to view diacritical marks throughout the site.

17. Is the site accessible to visually impaired users?

The site is designed to meet Priority 1 and 2 of the Web 3 Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. Compliance with each of these guidelines has also been documented and reviewed during the visual design build phase.
