A practical introduction to graphic design through projects and examples

Description

Working from an application-oriented approach, Effective Graphic Design introduces projects first and covers design concepts and tools as they're needed. The authors draw direct comparisons between a "before" and an "after" version of each project, presenting the weak design along with the first designer's markups. The designer then discusses the flaws and solutions in a brief narrative and offers his or her revised version. Every page includes highlighted key terms that direct students to the book's extended glossary. By highlighting specific flaws, contrasting them alongside their corrections, and focusing on solutions, this unique text helps students readily understand design principles and grasp their applications.

Features

  • Covers multiple approaches, showing students that design can have more than one "right" answer
  • Emphasizes teaching through contrast and presents before-and-after examples
  • Focuses on identifying and fixing design issues, which enables the book's content to remain relevant regardless of which software program is used
  • An extended glossary explains theory, vocabulary, best practices, and notations

Reviews

"Featuring an approachable format and text size, lush visuals, and examples of student exercises, Effective Graphic Design makes a compelling case for teaching through example and contrast."--Francis Chang, Binghamton University

"I would recommend this book because of its hands-on approach, which will appeal to my students. I can only lecture to students so much; they need to be making things and seeing things."--Bradford Hamann, Eastern New Mexico University

"Design is choice and there's not always a perfect choice. Students should see two solutions and how those solutions address audiences' needs differently. In Effective Graphic Design, the errors are really effectively marked, which works very well to illustrate the flaws within the language of design. The book's attractive, clean design can only help students receive the material better."--Heather Lettner-Rust, Longwood University
