Reviews

"Art of the Non-Western World is comprehensive, interesting, and presented in a conversational tone. It intertwines biography, analysis, and technique, and Kelker's tone makes much of the text seem narrative. The in-text definitions and pronunciation guides are great. The author displays no evidence of biases toward specific cultures. I would recommend this book highly to a colleague."--Betty J. Crouther, University of Mississippi

"The material is well organized, with appropriately detailed introductions and focused explanations of the individual art works and architecture. The writing is easy to read; its flow helps readers connect the respective pieces but is also concise enough for an audience of emerging scholars. This is a great alternative to using separate, culture-specific survey texts."--Eva Hericks-Bares, University of North Carolina Asheville

"This text offers a thorough and comprehensive overview of world art practices. Each chapter discusses a good balance of art, from architecture and decorative objects to painting and sculpture. The pronunciation key helps students read and verbally discuss foreign-language words and names with confidence. The discussion of Hiroshima is compelling, as many world art books elide any type of mention of this event and the artistic/architectural responses that resulted from it."--Marisa Lerer, Manhattan College

"I love the clear writing style, the chapter divisions, and the inclusion of pronunciations. I really appreciate maps that include content or historical info. but also have modern-day borders. I also like the way that painting styles are addressed and explained."--Monica Z. Eastridge, Riverside Community College
