Exercise 2: Writing Obituaries

INSTRUCTIONS: Write an obituary based on the information given below. Use your judgment, based on what you have read in this chapter, in deciding whether to use the most controversial details. Write the obituary in Associated Press style and correct any grammar, spelling and punctuation errors.


Identification: Lynn Marie Shepard. Age 20. Address: 854 Maury Road, Apt. 107B.

Circumstances of death: Taken to the emergency room at Mercy Hospital at 1 a.m. yesterday, where she died shortly thereafter. An autopsy conducted later in the day revealed that she died "of symptoms brought about by the ingestion of a large quantity of cocaine."

Funeral services: 5 p.m. tomorrow at Hines Brothers Funeral Home. Burial immediately following at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors: Her parents, Frank and Helen Shepard of 107 Eastbrook Avenue. Three sisters, Patricia, Virginia and Carol, all at home. A brother, William, a soldier stationed in Germany. Also, her college roommate of the last two years: Timothy Bolankner, also of 854 Maury Road, Apt. 107B.

Accomplishments: Salutatorian of her senior class at Central High School, where she was a member of the girls' volleyball team, a member of the homecoming court during her senior year and also school treasurer during her senior year. Now, a sophomore studying business administration at your school. She compiled a 3.8 gpa during her first full year of college and was on the Dean's List. A member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and the Business Honor Council. Worked part-time as a waitress at the Steak & Ale Restaurant. Hoped to someday own her own business.
