Chapter Outline

This outline can be a helpful study tool to assist you in seeing the order and sequence of the chapter and the relationship of ideas.  Use it to take notes as you read and/or to add concepts presented in lecture.

  1. Changes in communication technology create communication challenges.
    1. The accelerating pace of communication innovation presents challenges for interpersonal relationships in school, at work, socializing, and even at play.
    2. Changing demographics of communicators dissolve the old boundaries.
  2. Culture shapes communication.
    1. Culture consists of the language, values, beliefs, traditions, and customs people share and learn.
    2. Coculture perception and intergroup communication influence salience.
    3. We identify with in-groups and label those we view different as out-groups; but it is important to remember that generalizations do not apply to every member of a group.
  3. Subtle yet vitally important values and norms shape the way members of a culture communicate.
    1. Low-context and high-context cultures differ in communication styles.
    2. The individualistic and collectivistic orientations are viewed as representing the most fundamental dimension of cultural differences.
    3. Power distance and uncertainty avoidance influences tolerance of ambiguity.
    4. Ethnocentrism leads to prejudice and stereotyping but can be overcome with open-mindedness.
  4. The new masspersonal phenomenon combines social media with personal reasons for communicating.
    1. Social media are interactive and are distinguished by user-generated content.
    2. Mediated communication differs from the face-to-face form through message richness and the use of synchronous versus asynchronous communication.
    3. Another difference occurs in permanence comparisons. Face-to-face communication is transitory; by contrast, the mediated form is capable of being stored and forwarded.
    4. We use social media for information, personal relationships, personal identity, and entertainment.
  5. There are guidelines for social media communication competency.
    1. Choosing the appropriate channel, face-to-face vs. social media, can make a difference in achieving successful communication.
    2. Consider mediated communication etiquette. Be careful, be considerate, and exhibit civility.
    3. Be mindful of boundaries. Disinhibition can lead to flaming and cyberbullying.
    4. Be aware of bystanders, and balance mediated communication with face time to avoid depression, loneliness, and social anxiety.
    5. To be safe, always assume that mediated messages can and may be seen and heard by unintended recipients.
    6. Cell phone conversations and text messaging combined with driving pose physical safety hazards.
