OUP announces new MD for English Language Teaching division

23 March 2022

OUP has announced Santiago (Santi) Ruiz de Velasco—currently Managing Director of OUP Spain—as the new Managing Director for its English Language Teaching (ELT) division. Santi will take over from Peter Marshall, who will retire in June 2022 after almost 19 years at the Press.

Since joining OUP in 2021, Santi has played a vital role in driving OUP Spain’s post-pandemic recovery and has been closely involved in the division’s ongoing digital transformation.

Prior to joining OUP, Santi led the English Learning division at the British Council. He also spent 17 years at Pearson, holding several roles including Vice President of Pearson Western Europe and Managing Director of its Hispanic Markets.

Speaking about the move, Nigel Portwood, CEO said: ‘I know that I, and the rest of my Executive Committee, will benefit enormously from Santi’s enthusiasm, passion for education and English Language Teaching, and his valuable international perspectives and experience. I look forward to welcoming him into his new role.

‘I would also like to share my gratitude with Peter for his significant contribution to the Press over the years.’

Adding to this, Santi said: ‘English has had a transformational impact in my life. It has opened professional opportunities and allowed me to get to know, understand, connect, and learn from different people, cultures, and ideas around the world. OUP is a global leader in English language teaching, operating in a fast-changing environment. I am extremely excited to work with the ELT team to increase our impact and continue to change lives.’

Santi will start his new role in July 2022.
