Real learning, virtual adventures
03 June 2018
We are pleased to have collaborated with Google Expeditions to provide content for their new augmented reality app that launched this month.
Augmented and virtual reality layers digital graphics and simulations over a real environment through a device such as a smartphone or goggles. Built for the classroom, Google Expeditions is a teaching tool that enables educators to virtually transport their students to a place outside of their school or bring virtual objects into their classroom. Users can get up close with historical landmarks, dive underwater with sharks, and even visit outer space. The app offers more than 800 tours spanning both virtual and augmented reality.
Google Expeditions is designed to promote collaboration and teamwork through discovery, and aims to give students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom. It allows a teacher acting as a ‘guide’ to lead a group of ‘explorers’ through collections of 360° and 3D objects, while pointing out interesting sights along the way. Content is linked with supporting materials that can be used alongside the existing curriculum, enabling pupils to engage with the subject of their lesson in an immersive way—such as watching a volcano erupt, viewing the human respiratory system from the inside, or taking an expedition to explore a marine ecosystem.
Speaking of the app, Google Expeditions Program Manager Jen Holland explains: ‘Expeditions is a powerful learning tool. It provides a unique opportunity for supplemental learning by giving students new ways of exploring the concepts and places they are studying. We've been thrilled to see teachers use Expeditions to bring abstract concepts to life and provide students with a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom, infusing learning with excitement and fun.’
Our Head of Partnerships and Innovation Joseph Noble adds: 'Augmented Reality is a compelling way of fusing the physical and digital worlds and provides a fantastic opportunity for us to extend the reach of our books and lead our customers into new digital product and services. Google’s expansion of its Expeditions platform to include AR will help to prove and spread the technology in education. We are delighted to be a launch partner for content on the platform.'
