Celebrating ten years of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation
31 July 2013A foundation with close links to OUP in Southern Africa celebrated its tenth anniversary in July.
The Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) has been providing scholarships for African students since 2003, supporting African students studying at local universities.
Through a special agreement made in 2008, the foundation holds a stake in OUP Southern Africa (OUPSA). Dividends transferred from OUP to the MRF under this arrangement help fund the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships.
The scholarship programme aims to build leadership excellence in Africa, and has supported more than 200 scholars over the last ten years. A core element of the scholarship is a development programme designed to encourage scholars to focus on the principles of reconciliation, ethical leadership, entrepreneurship, and community involvement. The expectation is that scholars will go on to play leading roles in their fields and societies.
A three-day event was held from 26-28 July to mark the anniversary, featuring fundraising, a gala celebration, and workshops.
Lieze Kotze, Managing Director of OUP Southern Africa said: ‘Our relationship with the MRF has enabled us to make a very meaningful contribution to the lives of many African students over the years, providing them with opportunities which they in turn can use to help to shape a growing nation. This is a partnership we are very proud of, and it allows us to pursue our mission in the furtherance of scholarship, research, and education.’
