Supporting refugees to learn English
20 June 2018
We are pleased to have established a new partnership with Soutien Belge Overseas (SBO). SBO is a non-governmental organization that helps refugee children and young people who have missed out on years of learning due to conflict.
SBO provides non-formal education to hundreds of refugees through three Lebanese schools in Beirut, Arsal, and Saida. SBO volunteers had been using our resources to teach children English—they approached us for help to provide every child with a book to support their learning. We were happy to be able to donate 1,100 books and teaching resources for their effort.
Speaking about our contribution, SBO's Gregory Kirby said, ‘I was in search of a fun and comprehensive curriculum to help our students build an English level that would help them succeed in Lebanese public school. When I came across Oxford University Press’s Family and Friends series, I knew I had found what I had been looking for. The textbooks have improved the quality and consistency of English language education immeasurably. We are all very grateful, not least the students who are thoroughly enjoying their fun and active Family and Friends lessons.’
