OUP and ICCA National Mooting Competition 2018
20 July 2018
Last month saw the final of the OUP and ICCA National Mooting Competition 2017-18, with Daniel Cullen and Santosh Carvalho of Birkbeck University of London declared the winners. It was Birkbeck’s first time in the final, and the team were the first to win the competition under our partnership with the Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA).
Other teams represented in the final were Queen's University Belfast, Open University, and University College London. The winners received £750 prize money each, as well as a day marshalling HHJ Anthony Leonard at the Old Bailey, where they will have the chance to gain insight into how judges consider and manage cases.
Lady Justice Hallett, Vice-President of the Criminal Division of the Court of Appeal, presided over the final for the first time, commenting that it had been incredibly difficult choosing a winner and all the students were welcome in her court any day.
Jonathan Thorpe, co-ordinator of Birkbeck Law School's mooting programme, added: 'I am overjoyed at the success of our team winning the OUP/ICCA National Mooting Competition 2017-18. All four teams competing in the final deserve praise for reaching so far into this hard fought moot. Many thanks to the OUP/ICCA organizers, and to Lady Justice Hallett for judging the final. This was an invaluable and most memorable experience, and Birkbeck is very proud to have won'.
