Expert support
This course has been developed by science education expert and Complete Physics for Cambridge Lower Secondary author, Helen Reynolds. Helen is an Institute of Physics Teaching and Learning Coach, and a former Head of Science. She is an experienced secondary science teacher, and has an MA in Physics and a PGCE from the University of Oxford. She is passionate about developing scientific understanding through learner engagement.

Course structure
Taking place in your school, and led by experts, this day-long professional development course is made up of four modules, focusing on one of the key areas of the Cambridge Lower Secondary science curriculum framework - scientific enquiry:

  • Introduction to scientific enquiry - to understand the research behind enquiry-based science lessons and how they fit into the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum framework.
  • What do scientists do? - to reflect on how scientists work and identify opportunities for incorporating scientific enquiry in lessons, preparing students for Cambridge IGCSE progression.
  • Changing ideas - examining the development of scientific knowledge, its reliance on scientific enquiry, and how this can be explored in the classroom.
  • The nature of scientific enquiry - focusing on the role of modelling in scientific enquiry and considering how we know what we know, developing critical thinking skills required at Cambridge IGCSE.

Resources
On attendance you will be supplied with a participant workbook to track your learning journey during the session, and which you can take away for continued teaching support. You will also be presented with a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
