Lawrie studied Chemistry at University of London before training to be a teacher. He then taught for 20 years, most as Head of Departments, in a variety of large schools in and around Manchester. During this time, he completed a part-time Masters Degree in Science Education at Manchester University.
During his career, he has also been a Science Adviser for Norfolk County Council, supporting 50 secondary schools and over 400 primary schools. This involved running many courses for teachers, as well as supporting them in their classrooms with their day-to-day science teaching. During his career he has delivered professional development and worked with teachers in Ireland, Turkey, Barbados, India, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Jordan, and most of the Gulf states.
He became involved in writing science textbooks whilst teaching in Manchester, and when the opportunity came to pursue this as a full-time career, he became a freelance science education consultant and author/editor. He has been involved in the production of lots of best-selling science resources including Spotlight Science, Chemistry for You (GCSE and A Level editions), the AQA GCSE Sciences series and the Cambridge IGCSE & O Level Essential Science series. As such, he has made science more accessible and enjoyable for students around the world.
