The suite of Fonts used throughout the Nelson Handwriting programme is now available electronically as a download, which plugs into Microsoft Word. It has been designed so that you can produce your own customised, supplementary handwriting resources.
The Nelson Handwriting Font Softwareis for Windows and Apple Mac use only. It will not function on iOS and Android devices or in Google Docs on any device.
Q: What devices are compatible with the Nelson Handwriting font software?
The Nelson Handwriting Font Software is for Windows and Apple Mac use only. It will not function on iOS and Android devices or in Google Docs on any device.
Q: Does the download do exactly the same as the CD-ROM?
A: The new Nelson HW Font download has the same font styles as the old Font CD:
It has also fixed some issues the CD had, and is more user-friendly, as it has a toolbar in Microsoft Word, which shows a picture of each font type. See screenshots below.
Q: I’ve opened MS Word and a pop-up has asked me to "enable macros" – what should I do?
Enable the macros – this is what allows the font to function properly.
Q: How do I download and install the Nelson Font software?
A: For further support on how to download the Nelson Font, please click here.
Q: Can the Font Software be used on an Interactive Whiteboard?
A: Yes – but only by using Microsoft Word on a computer attached to an Interactive Whiteboard. As long as you open the Word document using the Nelson Handwriting Font Desktop icon and use the Nelson Handwriting Font menu, it will work if accessed using the control tool (pointer tool/cursor) on an Interactive Whiteboard.
Q: Will the Font Software work with the Smartboard or Promethean notepad and document software?
A: No – the Font Software will not work with the Smartboard or Promethean notepad and document software – this is because it needs the specifically-designed Word template to make the correct joins.
Q: Can schools have a trial version of the Handwriting Font?
A: No – once the software is installed on a machine, it’s there forever. We aren’t able to limit access for a trial period.
Q: Does the Font work in PowerPoint?
A: No – the cursive font can only be created in the specifically-designed template in Microsoft Word. However, teachers can use the print and pre-cursive fonts in PowerPoint – though we don’t offer support for any issues in PowerPoint. If teachers would like to use the cursive font in PowerPoint, they can write the text they need in Word, take a screengrab, and paste this image of the text into PowerPoint.
Q: Does the Font work in Publisher?
A: No – it only works with Microsoft Word.
Q: Does the Font Software work on Macs?
A: Yes, the Font Software works on both PCs and Macs. The technical specifications can be found at the top of this page.
Q: If the school replaces their computers in the future, will they have to buy the Font Software again?
A: No – as long as the school saves the installer file on their network when they first download the Font Software, they will be able to install the software on new computers in the future.
Q: What happens if the school accidentally throws away the card showing the download code?
A: If this happens, contact Customer Services and ask them to supply the school with a new code. To avoid this, please ask the schools to keep an eye out for it in the post. The card is A5 size, wrapped in plastic and – despite our best efforts – might be mistaken for junk mail. Here’s what it looks like:
Q: How do I use the software?
A: You have to launch the software from the shortcut to enable the fonts to work correctly.
Q: Why is the cursive font not working?
A: If you don't access the software from the shortcut then this will not enable the macro needed to produce the cursive style font. Please launch the software using the Nelson Handwriting Font Software shortcut.
Q: Does the software work with any other application except Microsoft Word?
A: No - the software requires Microsoft Word to run properly.
Q: How do I use existing content with the software?
A: Open the software using the shortcut on the desktop and copy and paste the existing content into the template file.
Q: Who should we contact if customers are having difficulties with the Font software?
A: If the customers are having specific difficulties downloading the software, they should contact firstname.lastname@example.org. For all other queries, e.g. installation difficulties, questions about how the software works, they should contact customer services at Kettering. This is detailed on the back of the card containing the Font software download code, but I am looking into making this clearer when we reprint the cards.
