Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: The Whatever it Takes Project

The ‘Whatever It Takes’ initiative was launched in 2009 to ensure that every child in Leicester reaches their age related reading standard by the end of primary school. A significant number of secondary schools chose to implement Fresh Start to rapidly accelerate progress. These schools included: 1. New College, Leicester - accredited by Ofsted as one of the most rapidly improving secondary schools in the country. 2. Babington Community College - judged to be Outstanding in April 2013. 3. Read Write Inc.: Brompton-Westbrook Primary School

Brompton-Westbrook Primary School is large school with a number of children are from Armed Forces families. In November 2010 when Brompton-Westbrook took on the full range of Read Write Inc. programmes, they had just been graded Satisfactory by Ofsted. Two years later and after implementing Read Write Inc. Phonics, Comprehension (now called Literacy and Language) and Fresh Start, the school was graded Good by Ofsted. In 2010 just 8% of children achieved level 3 in their KS1 reading. Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: Holgate Meadows Community Special School

Holgate Meadows Community Special School is a school for pupils ages 7- 16 years. The school population is 100% SEN and 75% of pupils are BESD. The school have found that Read Write Inc. has: 1. Increased pupils’ confidence in reading and writing 2. Improved pupils' behaviour as a result of improved confidence 3. Encouraged greater participation from pupils as anxiety around learning diminishes. 4. Made pupils more committed to choosing to read independently. Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: Edinburgh schools

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: Edinburgh schools

The introduction of the Fresh Start programme for P5-P7s in 19 pilot schools – 16 in areas of deprivation – has resulted in 70 per cent of youngsters recording improved scores in reading tests. Councillor Paul Godzik, education leader, said: “Encouraging children to read and write, and more importantly to enjoy, books is vital. The results from the Fresh Start project have been really encouraging and I’m delighted more schools are taking part.” Read the full newspaper article.

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: Penn Hall School

Penn Hall is a special school for children aged 3-19 years with physical disabilities and complex medical needs. Ofsted inspected the school in February 2013 and graded it outstanding. The report recognises the inclusivity of the teaching, which enables children to make progress despite their barriers to learning. Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: The Lancaster Secondary School

The Lancaster School is a specialist sports college for boys aged 11-16. The school have found that Read Write Inc. Fresh Start has improved boys reading and writing skills. Kenton School is a secondary school with low EAL and high FSM. The school have found that Read Write Inc. Fresh Start has improved pupil's reading ages by 13 months on average. Ince C of E Primary School is a large school in an area of deprivation with high FSM and low EAL in Wigan. The school have found that after implementing Read Write Inc. Fresh Start: 1. Their pupils are able to tackle SATs without a worry. 2. Children feel more confident.

John Dabell from Teach Primary magazine reviewed the Read Write Inc. Literacy and Language resources. He commented: 'Literacy and Language is eloquent, convincing and full of rigour. This is what a proper literacy programme should look like. It is meticulously organised, clearly structured and something on which to rely.
