William Wordsworth

A Life

Second Edition

Stephen Gill

  • The first biography to treat the whole of Wordsworth's life with equal seriousness and attention
  • Explores Wordsworth's career, his personal relationships, and the historical circumstances that affected his poetry
  • Written by a leading expert, the author has a deep knowledge of the Wordsworth archive and has taught Wordsworth's poetry and prose for four decades
  • An accessible yet scholarly volume that is free of academic jargon

New to this Edition:

  • Every page of the first edition of 1989 has been scrutinised and revised in line with scholarship since then (much of it the author's in his two OUP books. The long introduction considering the status of The Prelude as autobiography has been scrapped, since the argument made then has become part of mainstream thinking about the relation of life and art in this poet. The author had devoted more space to Wordsworth's experiences in the second half of his life and to the poems that in some way chronicled them. In this new edition Gill gives more attention to Wordsworth's relationship with his sister, Dorothy, and also emphasises more strongly the importance to him of his wife's love and support. Includes new illustrations.
