Vital Subjects

Race and Biopolitics in Italy

Rhiannon Noel Welch

Liverpool University Press

Transnational Italian Cultures LUP

  • Whereas much extant scholarship has focused upon the explicitly racist culture of Italian Fascism, Vital Subjects looks back to the period following Italy's formation as a modern nation-state in order to make a claim about including race and colonialism in accounts of Italian modernity before Fascism.
  • Employing a postcolonial, biopolitical approach - rather than a strictly anti-racist one - allows this study to address how Italian racial discourse eschews conventional binaries of inclusion/exclusion, white/black, and inferior/superior.
  • To date, there is no other biopolitical reading of racial discourse in modern Italy, and yet this discourse itself calls out for such a reading, given Italy's history of mass emigration and "demographic" or settler colonialism.
