for SATB (with divisions) and trumpet
The Spacious Firmament 2: Yet we who neither burn nor shine is a sequel to The Spacious Firmament. Both pieces may be performed separately, but The Spacious Firmament should always come first if they are programmed together (perhaps either side of an interval). If both pieces are sung, and so two trumpeters are available, it can be very effective if from bar 116 to the end the trumpet part of Yet we who neither burn nor shine is played by a second player offstage, or at a considerable distance from the choir.
Yet we who neither burn nor shine sets beautifully a specially commissioned text by Colin Tan which links in its imagery to the Addison text in The Spacious Firmament. Sensitive melodies eventually give way to a joyous climax, enhanced by the delayed trumpet solo which employs an ecstatic improvisatory passage over the choral lines.
