The Perils of Uglytown

Studies in Structural Misanthropology from Plato to Rembrandt

Harry Berger, Jr.

A Fordham University Press Publication

  • This book develops the notion of "structural misanthropology" as a model for culture change. "Structural misanthropology" is based on a dual paradox: first, the paradox of transcendence, whereby the creature becomes the creator of the creation in which it is a creature, but only on condition that it disowns its own act of making this creation up; and second, the paradox of technology, or the modern paradox, whereby the creator becomes the creature of the creation it has created. The book thus can contribute fundamental insights to any study of the relation between human beings and the things they have made, from religion to literature to art to technology.
