The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ was commissioned by the Warden and Fellows of Merton College, Oxford, to celebrate the 750th Anniversary of the foundation of the College. The libretto was compiled by the Revd Dr Simon Jones, Chaplain of Merton College.

There are three kinds of text in the piece - Biblical narrative (taken from all four gospels) into which are interpolated four Latin Hymns and four poetic texts in English by writers associated with Merton College. One of
