The Nature of Explanation

Peter Achinstein

This book offers a new approach to scientific explanation by focusing initially on the act in which someone explains something, then upon the "product" of that act--an explanation--and finally upon the evaluation of that product. The theory of explanation Achinstein develops is used to assess leading models of scientific explanation in the literature, to define "causal" and "functional" explanation, to determine the limits of explanation in the sciences, and to characterize concepts of scientific evidence.
