Sentinels is really a long, unrelenting march whose pulse never slackens or quickens, and in which slightly quirky military-style gestures are almost always present. Butler imagined four standing players to be acting as sentries, standing guard, keeping watch over the seated cellist.

Sentinels was written for the Brodsky Quartet and John Metcalfe to perform at the Brighton Festival 2006. It lasts for about 11 minutes and is in a single movement. Ive been really pleased to write for the Brodskys again, since I was at college with the original four (two of whom are still in the group), and they premiered my first two quartets (the first of which is unpublished).
