Rethinking Political Judgement

Arendt and Existentialism

First Edition

Maa Mrovlje

Published by Edinburgh University Press

How can we reinvigorate the human capacity for political judgement in our uncertain post-foundational world? This book takes up the challenge by calling on 20th century existentialism, in particular the works of Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus and Hannah Arendt. It shows how existentialism can resuscitate human judgement as a worldly, ambiguous practice by applying it to two contemporary problems in political judgement: the problem of dirty hands and the challenge of transitional justice and reconciliation.
