Lessons in Caring

Kenneth M. Heilman, M.D.

Ken Heilman is a world-renowned clinician, teacher, and researcher in cognitive and behavioral neurology. He has taught hundreds of medical and psychology students and residents and directed a post-doctoral program that has trained more than 60 fellows most of whom currently hold faculty positions and several of whom are now leaders in academic neurology, neuropsychology, and cognitive neuroscience. In his teaching, Dr. Heilman has found that stories of his own initiation into the world of doctoring are a helpful way to talk about the common professional, medical, and ethical challenges they will face in daily practice. The twenty-five stories gathered here span the author's first year as a medical intern at Bellevue Hospital during the 1960s, the period of his medical education that was to exert the greatest lasting influence on his work as a doctor.
