Orientalism and the Figure of the Jew

Jeffrey S. Librett

A Fordham University Press Publication

  • This book makes a novel argument linking Orientialism to the groundless felt and deplored in European modernity: it sees Orientalism as a search for a lost origin.
  • It this conceives the Oriental-Occidental relation following the lines of the Jewish-Christian relation as that between the prefigural "dead letter" and its fulfillment in the "living spirit." This means that one cannot understand the Orientalist problematic without exploring in detail its constant entanglement with the problematic of Christian anti-Judaism. To do so is the project of this book.
  • Although much of its subject matter concerns German material, the dynamic it traces is far from exclusively German.
