Evolution, Application, Integration

David T. Krohne

  • The Evolution Connection: Evolutionary theory is woven throughout the text for its explanatory and pedagogical power. However, certain evolutionary principles require further explication. These are separated out in the Evolution Connection boxes, which illuminate the relevant evolutionary theory and apply it to the ecological content of the chapter.
  • The Human Impact: Students engage more fully in science when they appreciate its relevance and application. Each chapter contains a Human Impact box that applies important principles from the chapter to a significant environmental issue.
  • On the Frontline: Many recent and classical studies are discussed throughout the text. "On the Frontline" boxes highlight a recent study that illustrates the application of the scientific method to the subject of the chapter. In these boxes, the hypotheses and the predictions that follow are clearly presented, and the data that support or reject those hypotheses are explained.
  • Do the Math: Ecology is a quantitative science. Many important mathematical analyses are presented clearly in the body of the text. More sophisticated quantitative issues are isolated and explained in boxes called "Do the Math" where the student can focus specifically on the mathematics relevant to the ecological questions at hand.
  • Active Learning Questions: Active student engagement in the material is facilitated by several integrated question types. At appropriate points in the body of the text, a short question titled "Thinking About Ecology" is presented. These ask the student to extend the material in new directions or to relate it to other concepts. Questions placed at the end of the Evolution Connection and Human Impact boxes serve the same purpose. In addition, each graph or diagram includes an embedded question that ensures that the student fully understands the figure and can relate it to other concepts in the chapter.
