"A valuable and timely addition to the literature on this topic, this volume providers a helpful and needed concise, accessible, overview of autism spectrum disorder. Covering a range of relevant topics and issues, this book reviews a range of important and timely topics including early diagnosis, neurobiology, treatments and models of intervention, directions for future research. Of value to both the more experienced and novice therapists, this work significantly adds to the literature." -- Fred R. Volkmar, MD, Irving B. Harris Professor and Director, Yale Child Study Center, New Haven, CT
"A is for Autism Spectrum Disorder", would be more befitting title for this wonderful book, the first in the Oxford pocket psychiatry textbook series. For despite the fact that this work is evidently meant to fit into one's pocket, it's text is more encyclopedic. From the earliest descriptions of the disorder, to tips on optimizing the medical and psychiatric exam; and from a review of autism neurobiology to the essentials of a functional behavioral assessment, this guide is likely to be in clinicians' hands more often than in their pockets. For these reasons and many more, this book deserves to have a large "A" inscribed on its spine; Perhaps an "A+." -- Bryan H. King, MD, Professor and Vice Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Director, Seattle Children's Autism Center, Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital, Seattle, WA
"This book, written by leading authorities on autism spectrum disorder, packs a great deal of information into one concise volume and is sure to be a valuable resource for researchers and clinicians alike." -- Tristram Smith, PhD, Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, Division of Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY
"Highly recommended, practical, compact, yet comprehensive volume on autism spectrum disorder. Especially strong on developmental considerations and behavioral interventions." -- Lawrence D Scahill, MSN, PhD, Professor of Nursing, Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT
"This is an excellent and concise guide to autistic disorder. Any professional involved in the care of individuals with autistic disorder should be aware of the information contained in this convenient pocket book." -- Doody's
"This is a small book, a pocket-sized book, with a pocket-sized font suitable for fitting its important message into only 340 pages. It is well-written, concise, readable, and comprehensive. Although I expected to find a few overstatements, omissions, or errors, I found that the book presents an accurate overview of the autism spectrum. I recommend this book heartily to others. There are few current publications on autism that better meet the needs of persons who are reading about autism for the first time as well as those who are expert in one or more aspects of the syndrome and wish to understand autism from a broader perspective. Parents, in particular, should find this a useful guide. The editors of the Pittsburgh Pocket Psychiatry series (of which this book is a part) should be congratulated for their success." -- The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry
