Changes to usage during the Covid-19 pandemic

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2020 OUP saw a reduction in authenticated usage for journals on the Oxford Academic platform, and for some of our Online Products. This was combined with an increase in guest (unauthenticated) usage of freely accessible content via search engines. When combined, authenticated and guest usage shows overall demand for content increasing during this time. Before the pandemic, many users relied upon automatic IP authentication to access their content whilst on campus. The increase in remote working has meant many users are not actively authenticating, which has led to the reduction in authenticated usage.

What should I do?

The impact on authenticated usage varies considerably between products, countries and customers. If you notice a small variation to your usage, this should not necessarily be a cause for concern. However, if you notice a more significant variation, it may be related to the changes in user behaviour described above. For further information and assistance in interpreting the data, please contact your usual sales representative.

What is OUP doing?

To address the challenges faced by remote users in gaining access to content, OUP has expanded authentication options, including rolling out Google Universal CASA, to ensure users from subscribing institutions can access subscription content no matter where they start their research. We aim to further improve our authentication options in 2021. This will include looking to implement new features, such as Seamless Access to streamline users’ journeys to authenticated content on the Oxford Academic platform, as well as investigating how to improve journeys to authenticated content via 3rd party discovery services. OUP will share news about developments later this year.
