Our Journals Story

Oxford University Press strives to publish the highest quality journals in every discipline and to deliver this research to the widest possible audience across the globe. We embrace new technologies to provide content in intuitive ways for the research and professional community. Oxford University Press prides itself on being both a part of and a partner in the academic community. As a department of the University of Oxford, we share a prestigious research heritage and an intuitive understanding of the needs of researchers and academics.

Working with societies and authors to publish exceptional content is just the start of our mission. We are committed to ensuring that our journals are disseminated worldwide so that researchers are able to access our content wherever and whenever they need it. This commitment is demonstrated through over three million article downloads on average per month, with access coming from nearly every country in the world.

Our focus on dissemination is also evident through the evolution of our open access (OA) publishing program, Oxford Open. We have over 100 journals using this optional OA model, and nine fully open access journals. We act inventively and responsibly on behalf of our publishing partners to experiment with different, sustainable open access business models, and regularly report on our findings, both to our partners and the wider academic community.

Partnering with the Library Community

We also work closely with the library community to make the Oxford Journals collections a realistic option for institutions of all sizes and budgets. OUP offers flexibility and relevant materials for libraries in circumstances where every dollar in the budget counts. For some of the poorest countries in the world, access to our content through even the most flexible pricing models would be out of reach. Through our Developing Countries Program, we offer over 2000 institutions free or greatly discounted online access to most of our journals. We also partner with the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP), the HINARI project from the World Health Organization, and the eIFL Foundation to provide access in developing countries through their networks so our journals are accessible to the people who critically need them. As a publisher we recognize that it is the journals themselves that are the mainstay of the researcher's scholarship. We ensure that the journal is at the center of the services and research we offer, and tailor our publishing to societies' needs in order to give a journal the best possible profile in its field.

With over 100 years' experience producing authoritative journals; we are diligently transforming our publishing to ensure researchers get the latest cutting-edge content from a global research community. With the added benefit of global presence in major established and emerging markets around the world including China, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, and Mexico, the OUP journals team, worldwide, is distinguished by their immense dedication, commitment, and belief in our publications and OUP's scholarly mission.
