This companion website features a sampling of the songs discussed in Katherine Bergeron's Voice Lessons: French Mélodie in the Belle Epoque. Because the book's argument features many close readings of songs and poems, the author has provided these recordings as a supplement to the reading. In addition to more recent performances, the website features historical readings by Claire Croiza, Jane Bathori, Reynaldo Hahn, and Sarah Bernhardt herself. These well-known singers and diseurs of the period provide a glimpse of the rich culture of the voice that informed the French mélodie.
All tracks are listen-only. Readers who would like to download the 2009 recording of Fauré's La Chanson d'Eve included on this website may find it at www.soundidea.org/voicelessons.
