Knowledge (Declarative Knowledge)

By the end of this chapter you should have declarative knowledge about:
  1. Five models of direct practice: (1) the fiduciary model, (2) crisis intervention, (3) case management (4) case advocacy and (5) individual therapy
  2. Three clinical methods of therapy: (1) individual, (2) family, and (3) group
  3. The construct of  "best practices"
  4. The client"s point of entry in direct practice
  5. The contributions of earlier social work educators to the cumulative knowledge base of social work practice with individuals
  6. The different conceptualizations of direct and indirect social work practice - the five    W"s
  7. The conceptualization of social work"s planned change process
  8. The relationship between declarative knowledge and procedural knowing. e.g.    making inferences about fresh client data by using stored declarative knowledge
  9. The six elements of procedural knowing common to all therapy models
  10. The relationship between procedural knowing and the enactment of a therapeutic       process
  11. The premises of major competing theories of human behavior; why people behave      the way they do and how they change
  12. Brief and long-term models of clinical social work practice with individuals
  13. Theory-guided therapies and empirically supported treatments used to work with       individuals.
  14. Missteps or ruptures in the healing relationship
  15. The constructs of transference and counter-transference
  16. Indicators that signal that the therapeutic process in not going well

Skills (Application of Knowledge " Procedural and Tacit Knowing)

By the end of this chapter you should demonstrate beginning competency in work with individuals by being able to:
  1. Establish a worker-client relationship based on belief bonding or therapeutic    alliance as warranted by the facts of the case
  2. Use the three levels of assessment described in chapter 13
  3. Use the decision tree to guide selection of theory-guided therapy choices and     empirically supported treatments
  4. Develop a treatment matrix (case-specific model) for the case at hand using the seven steps of the decision tree
  5. Conduct a therapeutic session and/or enact a theory-based therapeutic process
  6. Manage missteps or ruptures in the therapeutic alliance; manage transference and    counter-transference as warranted by theory choice
  7. Use process recordings and supervision to move from novice to master clinician


  1. Adhere to social work"s core values for direct practice; acceptance, client self-    determination, nonjudgmental attitude, confidentiality
  2. Respect the role of mentorship in the supervisor-student relationship
  3. Respect all theory-guided therapies as having value equal to one another and                            differential value in their  proper or improper application
  4. Respect therapy as a method of social work practice having value equal to other    methods of practice and differential value in its proper or improper application
  6. Appreciate the role of evidence in determining best practices
  7. Value open assessment
  8. Appreciate the role of critical thinking in theory choice
  9. Value the art of healing as a legitimate function of social work practice
