About the Authors

Joel Blau is Professor of Social Policy at the School of Social Welfare, Stony Brook University. His other books include Illusions of Prosperity: America"s Working Families in an Age of Economic Insecurity (Oxford, 1999) and The Visible Poor: Homelessness in the United States (Oxford, 1992), which won both a Choice award as one of the year"s outstanding books in sociology and a designation from World Hunger Year as one of the 100 most significant books on homelessness and poverty.

Mimi Abramovitz is Professor of Social Policy at Hunter College School of Social Work and the University and Graduate Center, City of New York. Her other books include Regulating the Lives of Women: Social Welfare Policy from Colonial Times to the Present, 2nd ed. (1996) and Under Attack and Fighting Back: Women and Welfare in the United States, 2nd ed. (2000), which was named an "Outstanding Book" on the subject of intolerance by The Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. She also works closely with grassroots groups so that her research and writing are closely connected to the real world.
