This year, OUP collaborated with IndoMobil and TeachCast to bring digital learning to parts of Indonesia where connectivity is poor, using trucks as mobile classrooms.

TeachCast offers Oxford’s English Language Teaching courses as real-time lessons where certified teachers based in the US are live-streamed to the learners via the truck’s own satellite link, using OUP content for lessons and homework.

TeachCast teacher Dana Curtis commented ‘It’s amazing. The Indonesian students are excited and very interactive. Most of these students haven’t had any online experience prior to this, and most have never had an opportunity to study English in a traditional setting.  To have an interactive American English teacher show up on screen, in their rural setting, is seen as a miracle to the student and their parents.’

There are currently two trucks in operation reaching approximately 1,000 adult learners across Java Island. Six additional trucks are already in production with the aim to eventually have 500 trucks reaching 150 learners each, every day.

‘The battle to bring web connectivity and its benefits to everyone on planet Earth is far from over. Whether it is via Facebook’s internet drones, Microsoft’s TV whitespaces project, or Google’s balloons, the tech world is racing to connect the next one billion. Through the TeachCast with Oxford satellite trucks we can participate in this race and improve educational outcomes of English learners in Indonesia,’ Joseph Noble, Head of Channels and Partnerships, ELT.
