In memory of John Soars 1951 – 2012

31 August 2012

OUP is saddened to announce the death of John Soars on Friday 24 August. John, co-author of Headway, was diagnosed with cancer last October and had been receiving treatment. Headway was one of ELT’s most successful and influential course books, and testament to John’s passion for education and language teaching which inspired generations of teachers and students.

Hardworking and committed, John put his heart and soul into his writing and was driven by a need to give his best in everything he did. John Soars leaves an indelible legacy that will continue to inspire and touch the lives of many.

John was wise and thoughtful, with a profound understanding of human nature. Devoted to his family, John also built many friendships over his 28-year writing career with OUP, and will be much missed. The contribution to ELT which John made with his wife and co-author Liz remains unparalleled.

Our thoughts are now with his family at this difficult time.

If you would like to leave a message of condolence please post a message to the announcement on the ELT website. All messages will be passed on to John's family.
