OUP has released its first app that is compatible with Apple Watch: ELT’s Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD)—so now learners have words literally up their sleeve!

Developed with OUP’s established app development partner Paragon, users can look up words with voice recognition, open entries, listen to pronunciations, and check the Word of the Day from their Apple Watch. The Watch functionality complements the full OALD9 app for iPhone.

First published in 1948, the OALD introduced a ground-breaking approach—replacing complex dictionary definitions with simple, clear explanations tailored to the needs of language learners. Today, it is one of OUP’s best-selling products and the world’s best-selling advanced learner’s dictionary.

The ninth edition was published in 2015 and features resources to develop strong communication skills. The online version includes innovative features such as the iSpeaker for pronunciation practice and the iWriter to help learners plan, compose, and review their written work.
