Oxford University Press releases adaptive English language vocabulary app

Oxford University Press releases adaptive English language vocabulary app

04 September 2015

3 September 2015 – Oxford University Press’s new Oxford English Vocabulary Trainer app offers English language students their own personalized language tutor.

Launched in August, Oxford English Vocabulary Trainer provides learners with a fresh and dynamic way to learn words. By using the wordlists from their coursebook, or selecting vocabulary from the app’s fully integrated multilingual dictionary, learners can target the words they need to learn. The apps’ instant, visual feedback on spelling, grammar, meaning, and usage guides their learning—coaching them to build a better understanding of English vocabulary.

Oxford English Vocabulary Trainer helps learners through an adaptive learning experience. The app tests learners’ knowledge of words and guides them to the right answers with personalized feedback and hints, including picture clues, definitions, anagrams, and audio. It makes use of artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and spaced repetition (words are practiced at the point when the learner is likely to forget them) to reinforce learning. Meanwhile, gamification features such as stars, points, and badges keep learners engaged and motivated to keep practising and progressing.

Oxford English Vocabulary Trainer was developed in collaboration with Alphary GmbH, a talented language-technology start-up from Austria. Joseph Noble, Head of Channels and Partnerships at OUP explains: ‘We wanted to build a next-generation vocabulary-learning product. So we worked with Alphary, to create the Oxford English Vocabulary Trainer, which provides a personalized and engaging way of learning vocabulary, as well as gives teachers meaningful insights into student progress.’

Currently, the app can be used alongside major ELT coursebook titles Navigate and English File 3rd Edition, with more titles on the way. The multilingual dictionary, supporting English, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Spanish, Turkish, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Thai, is also expanding with more languages coming soon.

Subscription based, with a free 14-day trial, Oxford English Vocabulary Trainer is available from the AppStore on a monthly subscription of EUR 6.99 or yearly subscription of EUR 69.99.
