Chapter 13: Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos

example code (.tgz)

  • VANDERPOL: an animation of the Van der Pol oscillator.
  • FORCEDPENDULUM: produces a Poincare map of the forced pendulum. With default parameters, the forced pendulum exhibits chaotic behaviour. The accumulation of points in the Poincare map takes several minutes.
  • HENONHEILES: can produce either the orbit or the Poincare map of the Henon-Heiles system. To generate the map, add the "-m" option. Faster accumulation is activated with the "-f" option. The energy of the system can be specified by adding E=[value] to the command line. We suggest exploring E=0.06 through E=0.16, the latter being fully chaotic.
  • DOUBLEPENDULUM: allows to interactively explore properties of the double pendulum, particularly, the extreme sensitivity to initial values of coordinates and momenta.
