Arguing that innovation will occur where there is greatest economic benefit to the innovator, von Hippel shows in this synthesis of seminal research that in certain fields end-users, suppliers, and others--rather than manufacturers--are sources of innovation, and describes how this innovation can be predicted. He also proposes and tests some implications of replacing a manufacturer-as-innovator assumption with a view of the innovation process as predictably distributed across users, manufacturers, and suppliers.
